Just looking for opinions if I'm being unrealistic or not.

Our (coming up for 3yr old) A1 has the technology pack and as such we could use all the Audi Connect features when my wife was using an Android phone (its her car now).
However I got her an iPhone last Christmas totally forgetting about the compatibility issues with the car and the phone not allowing RSAP. So since Christmas its only been handsfree she's been able to use.

I believe the newer A1's with Technology Pack allow a SIM to be inserted into the car so the online service can use this but still allow the mobile phone to work as handsfree. Whereas with our A1 if you put a SIM into the car it over rides the mobile so you can't use handsfree.

So I took our car into Audi for an MOT just before the warranty ran out and asked them if their was a fix for the problem. When I picked the car up I was told that would be a chargeable service and not covered under the warranty. Given that I've had the car serviced there, took it there for warranty work and now the MOT, I wasn't best pleased.

After a bit of discussion I was told they weren't sure if the firmware update would actually sort the problem. Audi were aware of it but couldn't guarantee the update would work or not!!!! The dealer then told me they would only charge an hours labour @£100plus and if it didn't work they wouldn't charge. I told them I wasn't happy so if they could give me details I would contact Audi myself. This seemed to completely change their mind and they are now willing to do it free of charge to save me going back and forth to Audi.

Given that its just a firmware update and my car was already in getting work done was I being unrealistic expecting this to be free?

I was just about to ask them if they would charge me for a firmware update for their emission scandal but it never got to that point

I'm dubious about it actually solving the issue as I had the same thing on my SQ5 and they never got an update for it.

Although in your head the update is plug in, press go, leave for 10 mins, its not actually that simple - don't ask me why they made it so complicated! It is probably at least an hour of their time, and while not a lot, they are a business and are likely to want to charge you for that labour.

Given you got it FoC by complaining then what's the problem?

There's not a problem at all. I was just curious to hear others opinions of whether I was being unrealistic or not.
They claim its a 3 hour job. SD card in the slot and that's it. Maybe similar to how they add Sat Nav?

On my old MK6 Golf you could update the firmware yourself this way although it was only a 10 minute job.
On My MK7 this is how the Maps get updated, again you can do it yourself free of charge.

Did they attempt to charge you with your SQ5?

They never attempted it as the update was never released, but they certainly suggested with would just do it should an update became available. It was under warranty and a service plan at the time though.

I think it's not unreasonable for them to ask for a charge, but equally as you found, it's the kind of thing you can easily avoid.

I have been arguing with my local dealer about this as well.

I have not got the sim card but I have the tech package and wanted to get the new maps and the latest firmware they would not confirm if the new firmware could be applied even though it is available .

The update is available see here for £175 plus vat.

Also I have found the newest firmware available (k9000) on line not sure if I have the bottle to apply the update though anyone want to try?

If so ill post linl

Porche, BMW and Jaguar, charge the customer for the update, why not Audi.

My boss was asked for £490 for his update to his Porche Boxter S, he declined the offer.

Its a clever way of making money from the customer.

Sat/Navs and other items do need updating every few years, and as most modern units are SD card or DVD operated, the manufacturer obviously want to charge the customer for the pleasure.

The firm ware is not vital, some customers go for it, whilst others do without.

Nothing clever about it, nav updates are a waste of time as they are always 2-3 years out of date, and its Porsche, not Porche

Sorry I missed your post. I never knew it was offered as an update by 3rd parties. That's interesting. Reading it though ours wouldn't be compatible as I'm sure ours is the MMI 3G High.

I thought you got the SIM slot automatically if you had the Technology Pack or is that what the High represents?

Sim slot comes with Mobile High package only .

Ours can be upgraded and have even spoke to hazeydays as they can connect a router to the ami port to enable Google Earth on my unit.
Just read the blurb on their site - it seems a bit pointless as you can't use it for Audi Connect services to send Google destinations to the car (which is the main reason I have the SIM option on my cars). So while Google Earth looks nice, and WiFi in the car is occasionally handy, it doesn't seem worth it to me with the restriction.

I am not surprised, firmware updates for their vehicles have cost VW considerable money to develop, why should a customer expect such an update for nothing, and if a vehicle has issues, then it costs VW a lot of money in development costs to solve those issues.

Somebody was employed to develop and write that bit of software, and i bet it was not cheap either.

Development costs are usually passed down to the customer in some way or other.

Nothing is free when it comes to keeping a car with technical issues on the road, somebody has to pay for it.

Why not the customer.

Would you pay to update you're iOS on the iPhone I wouldn't .

Yet Apple make new phones and provide a update soloution for old phones .

Audi make new cars with new software .

Audi have provided a update soloution in the mmi via a ad card.

Why can't I download this for free of there website and install my self .

I understand the charge for new maps but not for firmware.

Its not a firmware update thats needed though, thats the difference, its a want by a customer.
