No, not only does the cable only work on the VW Audi range of cars (including the VW produced Bentleys) but it does not really fix anything. So even if they had one and diagnosed the cause of the problem they would still have to take the car to a garage to get the part replaced.

I am not worried about liabilities. I just don't want to mess up anyone's car

But as far as I can tell, unless you really go crazy and change things without intending to you are unlikely to be able to do any serious damage.

But I am just a careful type of guy and prefer to be as sure as I can be.

I also worry about enabling things like "hill hold", what would happen if it developed a fault and the Audi dealer states that you didnt pay for it and so it should not be enabled. After all if it is just a setting on VCDS why do they charge so much for it, perhaps it is to covet the cost of repairs under guarrantee etc if it goes wrong? Who knows, surely they are not just profiteering?

Apparently not!!

I tried with a cheap - illegal cable and could not do it. Nor could I even set my mirror to dip on reverse.

Two minutes with a legal cable and all done.

The cheap cables are only cheap because they do not have the latest release of the official software

The difference is just the software, a cable is a cable (albeit with a clever little chip on it to prevent pirate versions from working)

My official VCDS cable just arrived today.

Since we have four Audis in the family - 3 A2s (AMAZING cars) plus my A1 (also AMAZING) it was worth the £264.

But now I am even happier, it took me 5 minutes to disable the Video In Motion (I have a cowl that I made that prevents me from seeing the screen, but my wife can watch the end of Coronation square farm (or whatever it is!))

I also managed to get the auto dipping mirror on reverse to work (2 minutes).

I plan to play a bit more (already have the "Swoosh" done using my "other cable").

But these cables are fantastic.

What MY is your A1? i had access to a legit cable and i couldn't see the number to activate VIM, my car is MY2012 so maybe in earlier models is available.

Mine is a 2012 My delivered last October.

If you follow the instructions on this site for the mirror and on the link I posted re the VIM it should all work.
Are you sure you have the latest software from Ross-tech?

If so then let me know exactly what is happening and I will try to compare with my results and we can pin it down.

Perhaps that is the reason, mine has the tech pack. But I wouldn't have thought it would make that much difference, but I guess that something is, so you may be right.

Yes I did try with the "cheap" cable and I couldn't get into the control module at all.
I could get into the module for the reverse dip but it wouldn't take the setting.

As for the cowl it is just a cardboard prototype at the moment I wasn't going to do it properly until I sorted the VIM.
