Hi there, need some advice please. I'm a recent owner of an Audi Tdi 1.6 sport. When I bought it from the car dealer he told me the cambelt had already been changed but I needed to view online with my audi. Com. I went through this process only to find it has no records of this being done. The local audi dealership is saying that Audi recently changed the cambelt renew to 140,000 miles with no time limit either, just pure mileage. It does say on my audi.com that this is to be renewed at 140000 with no time limit too. I'm so confused as to what I should do as I don't want to drive a car that could breakdown at any time but want peace of mind too. The quotes for Audi to replace the belt and water pump is £873 which is a lot of money to pay out on top of just buying the car. It has done 55k and is a 2013 plate. Any advice on this would be gratefully received.

1) When you say Audi.com is where you checked your service records, I guess you mean: myAudi – Landesauswahl ? This actually works better in App form on your mobile phone, you'll usually find the Cambelt replacement under 'Additional Work'.
2) If the dealer is saying that the work has been done then there will be an invoice and job sheet for it - even if it was internal for the garage. You will expect to see parts and labour on the document.
3) Cambelt changes are not discretionary - if the belt should break or the water-pump bearings fail (hence being replaced together) then the engine has a very terminal (super expensive) event so you should stay on the side of caution - if the dealer can't prove it was done as they said then it needs doing.

and I get nudging 50mpg out of my my 1.5 petrol auto...
The mileage quote might be the standardised system the manufacturers were forced to adhere to - which was done entirely indoors on a rolling-road, completely meaningless in the real world.

We should not think ill of the sales fellow, he may be repeating what he was told in good-faith however the fact remains that the cam belt replacement wasn't recorded in the Audi system so an awkward conversation is going to be needed.
