Hi guys
Looking into which is the better car to go for engine wise. I've pretty much decided already to get the s line range. I've worked out the cost of both over 4 yrs taking into account the extra cost for the diesel and I come up with the petrol overall is just over £500 more so not much in it. The petrol is quicker but route to work is mostly motorway so will there be much difference?
Any thoughts which engine you reckon to go for as I'm at crossroads

Thanks

It is funny but this is my exact problem too! I do 20k miles a year but only keep about 18 months and i cant decide which engine to go for? i like driving and i think the tfsi would give more driving pleasure than the diesel. Only test drove the 1.2 so far and was really impressed with how responsive and nippy it was. So i would expect the 1.4 to be even better. I used to have the 1.6tdi engine in my Ibiza sc and it never got above 49mpg and the dpf light came on as soon as you drove it round town 2 days in a row. If the fuel consumption is not going to be too bad in the petrol i must admit i am leaning that way. I am looking at the s line too as it looks really nice.

If its any help, I only had my 14 TFSI a few weeks, and im totally knocked out by it. Coming from a BMW 330d I was worried that I might have made a bit of a cock up after ordering, I might miss the grunt and ride comfort that car gave me, blimey the little Audi rides as well, is not noticeably slower, and is just as quiet

Could you stretch to a 2.0 TDI? Faster than the TFSI and probably better mpg than 1.6 TDI with 6th gear, £20 a year road tax, better re sale value and the 2.0 TDI BE comes with some nice toys. :)

If not, TFSI imo.

Take it easy on M/way you should get 45mpg with 1.4,plus fuel is cheaper. For me to buy a diesel I would want a car that does a real 55-60 mpg which the 1.6 does not appear to be doing in many cases.Maybe the 2.0 will be better.
2.0 will be similar, except for better mpg when cruising faster in 6th I think.

Generally diesel can be good on long motorway runs and bad in short city runs or heavy traffic - a lot depends on the conditions and usage so you have to consider all the factor before deciding.

I'm very happy with this TDI (even more after TMC box :D ) and it's working great for me but I know some are getting worse mpg than expected and would be better off with TFSI - so again, it's all down to individual circumstances.

Have a look here, maybe it'll help a bit:

Had my 1.6 tdi now for 2 weeks now. Altho disapointed with not even hitting Audis claimed worse figure (64.2mpg).
I am a realist and an sure i may hit 60mpg per tank if i am careful.
I am getting overall 52 at the moment with 460miles on the clock. Which was same as my previous ford fiesta 1.6tdi. That ended up doing 58mpg after30k miles.

Would say between 50 - 60mpg is a good average for everyday use (IMO).
So if your doing over 15k miles a year i would go for a diesel. Better resale also. Plus plenty of grunt without need of a tuning box.

Interesting to see you have worked out that petrol is only £500 more with all costs after 4 years, I would have thought the diesel would have returned better result over that time.

To be honest on that basis get the petrol.

As others have mentioned maybe look at the 2 ltr diesel, if you have a motorway commute then the diesel should make more sense (in theory).

Other things to consider are engine noise, including exhaust note, fun drives on twisty roads and what cars you have had before. I havnt driven the diesel A1 so I cant comment, but the petrol is very nice

Came up with £500 over 4 years by also taking into account the petrol is £95 a year tax compared to zero on diesel. Diesel works out a little more on insurance at a average of £40 a year based on current quote. Diesel is £650 more. Based on 11k miles a year petrol works out £250 more to run based on claimed mpg. All this I worked out to be just over £500 more after 4yr for the petrol.

If the diesel mpg is no where near the manufacturers figures then it's looking very much in petrol favour.

The 2ltr diesel black edition looks very nice but at about £3k hike in price and high insurance. As its for my partner who has no no claims bonus. Plus the fact she is used to just a 1.3 disel corsa. I reckon it gonna cost well over £ 400 a year extra on insurance alone for this.

If mpg isn't reality for the diesel then the overall cost difference will probably a lot closer to break even, and given that I could save a little on finance buying cheaper petrol cash price, and a quicker engine and I'm guessing it sounds much better. It's all adding up to the petrol at the mo.

I'm thinking of s line in Daytona grey and upgrade to the 18' alloys. If I could get the black ed alloys would be even better. Is climate control worth getting? Is windscreen defrost function any good? If not, is it possible to get after market fittings to change the 3 knobs to them nicer Crome ones.

Don't know yet either, to get the xenons. I know they look nicer but are they actually a lot better at night to use?

Sorry for rambling on
Cheers

Climate Control is Brilliant ...

Looks Nice, Love the Quality of the materials used on the knobs etc.

Thats the thing with Options, they don't add anything to PX, Future Value when you come to sell just the desirability to the person who wants certain items.

I'm sure I read you get 25% if the RRP for extras when you sell on?

So £600 on bose actually costs £450?

I had an A1 1.4 Tfsi for six months and got an average of 44.7mpg over that time. i then went to a golf 2.0 tdi and got 49.2mpg.
I now have an A1 s-line 1.6 TDi and am averaging 59.9mpg so far. It is true to say that the tfsi is much faster than the Tdi but I find the drive of the Tdi much more relaxed without the screaming enging noise of the 1.4 Tfsi. Its all personal choice but its TDi all the way for me. :D

Ummm....swaying in the middle again now...lol....I'm thinking as she is used to a slow corsa diesel (0-60 = 13.5sec). The tfsi may be to much or a change, where as the tdi will drive similar and is still quite a bit faster than her corsa. The way she drives, being a lot on motorway, swings in tdi favour and the fact the residual will be better. Got some thinking to do. It's gonna be a surprise for her so it's for me to decide, but I can no longer drive these days.....best if I ask dealer to take me for test drive in both might be better way of deciding.

Before I had to stop driving due to eyesight, my last car was the vw golf 25th anniversary edition, with the 1.9tdi.....loved that car. That was about 10 yrs ago now and paid £19k brand new, and this a1 sline will cost same so prices have edged up a little I guess.

I had a test drive of a s tronic competition line 1.4 petrol and competition line tdi and ended buying a tdi sport I am used to diesel and prefer the low down torque you get, yes you have more horse power with the petrol but have to rev it. I suppose at the end of the day it's all down to preference, I would suggest trying both my dealer didn't mind in the slightest.
