I hardly drive in traffic but sometimes when I am parking it kicks in,I just think it is putting wear on the starter motor for no reason.

I'm also wondering if the start/stop function is healthy if you drive all the time in Central London.

It turns on and off practically every 50 seconds.

Just press the deactivate start stop button on the dash when you start up...

In that case then maybe it is best to turn it off. You could also keep your foot on the clutch and solve that problem too :D

I'm wondering if in fact you use more fuel if the engine is constantly stopping and starting.

In my last car (Mini Cooper) I turned it off all the time because the mechanism was so clumsy. In the Audi, it's much more subtle, I hardly notice it.
