Well, the news that the S1 will be coming should be taken with a touch of colour. Discussions with Audi today losely confirmed that it will happen, but not within the timeframes indicated by the article.

Historically Audi keeps the more powerful versions of their models until later in the lifecycle, and being that we're stuck with the 1.4 and 1.6 TDI until 2011, there is little chance of any super mini version before the year is out.
As for the engine to power this little beast, word is that the 1.8T, as found in the Polo GTi could find its way under the A1 bonnet, but there are others saying that the 2.0 TSi as found in the A3/S3/TT/TTS could squeeze its way into the engine bay.
One odd thing to note is that in all other "S" versions of current Audis the Quattro 4WD makes its presence very well known. The S1, however, could prove to the contrary. It would be quite a shame to exclude this system, even in its non-permanent version, Haldex, on the A1, as we think that it would really put it into a class of its own.
What are your thoughts on the S1?
