Well, the news that the S1 will be coming should be taken with a touch of colour. Discussions with Audi today losely confirmed that it will happen, but not within the timeframes indicated by the article.

Historically Audi keeps the more powerful versions of their models until later in the lifecycle, and being that we're stuck with the 1.4 and 1.6 TDI until 2011, there is little chance of any super mini version before the year is out.

As for the engine to power this little beast, word is that the 1.8T, as found in the Polo GTi could find its way under the A1 bonnet, but there are others saying that the 2.0 TSi as found in the A3/S3/TT/TTS could squeeze its way into the engine bay.

One odd thing to note is that in all other "S" versions of current Audis the Quattro 4WD makes its presence very well known. The S1, however, could prove to the contrary. It would be quite a shame to exclude this system, even in its non-permanent version, Haldex, on the A1, as we think that it would really put it into a class of its own.

What are your thoughts on the S1?

Could they really squeeze the 2.0tfsi into the space??
No I don't believe they can and there has certainly not been any suggestion from Audi that this is planned. There have however been test done with the 1.8TFSI - this engine has come along way and in combination with the s-tronic gearbox, it would make for a very fun drive!

This combination always felt right in the A3, even in FWD. The A1, being a much lighter car would feel much more agile and Audi have done a great job already with keeping the centre of gravity down.

Officially there are still no plans for an S1, certainly not for the first year. However, as always we are experimenting and although the quattro system was not originally intended to work with the A1, don't rule out a 1/2 electric, 1/2 petrol engine quattro system. This has been tried before in concept form and 2012 will see a whole new range of electric powered Audis - both hybrid and full electric.

The E-tron name will become a brand as big as quattro

Surely the Polo GTi has a 1.4 TFSi engine, not a 1.8 as stated

Yes, you are quite right! It was the previous version of the GTi that had the 1.8!

The points made remain though, as the S1 has been mentioned to be carrying the 1.8 engine - I cannot see an "S" bringing less than 200BHP to the party....
