The fuel light in most cars is set to come on when there is approx 1 gallon left. How far you can go depends on the MPG you get.

mines come on just as the needle touches red an states 45 miles left..but as stated will depend on your mpg driving style.

When I had my A2, I didcovered just how far I could push my luck one day when I stretched it to almost 70miles.. I had a spare can with me and I just wanted to see how far I could go.. got scared in the end cos I did not want to start sucking up the crap into the fuel line, but when I got to a fuel station, I was able (according to the fuel pump) put almost 43L into my 42L tank.. talk about running on fumes..
