Missed Opportunity !!!

Postby Peter1963 » Sat Mar 28, 2015 7:40 pm

Back in 1985 i could have purchased a low mileage 1977 one owner from new Ford Escort RS1800 for only £17000.
At the time it seemed like far too much money to pay, even for one of the rarest and most desirable RS Escorts ever produced.
A work colleague was emigrating to New Zealand, and even though he was prepared to take the car with him, he asked me if i would like first refusal on buying it from him.

At the time my salary was not especially impressive, and even though i had just about enough savings to buy the car, it would have left me nearly broke.

Two years ago i saw one for sale advertised by a specialist Rally company based in Ireland, and he was asking £48000 for it. Within the month the car was sold.

That would have been a healthy return on my £17000 investment, but it would almost be like me buying a new Audi R8 instead of my A1, just about achievable but i would have little left afterwards.

I remember years ago my dad bought an MGBGT for a couple of grand, about a year later he got offered a mint E Type for £10k, and my mum said 'no way, you haven't bothered with that MG since you got it, we dont need another sitting in the garage'

a year or so later and the prices of E-types rocketed, the MGBGT never really went up, my old man was gutted he didn't put his foot down

I also had a Series One RS Turbo that i sold for around £5k, was extremely clean. The next owner sold it for £6,500 and the following owner over a year later sold it for over 7k and now it would be close to £10k, garage has sat empty since I sold up and never needed the cash, should have kept it!

My dad made the mother of all mistakes, when he lived in London in the late 60's he was offered a 300SL by a friend who was skint and needed the cash, dad could have owned the car for £750, funny to think these were pretty much worthless back then, my dad didn't buy it because he couldn't afford to ship it back to NZ. Today they are worth 2.5 to 3 million NZD.
