Audi A2 to make a come back?!

Postby Jae » Thu Aug 19, 2010 11:18 pm

It's rumoured that the old Audi A2, the car that lead but didnt head the popularity stakes, looks set to make a return as the ideal platform for Audis first eTron.

The A2, as some of you may know, was Audis small car of the new millenium. With its ground breaking spaceframe technology and its raised floorpan, it makes the idea chassis to carry all those lithium ion battaries around!

While being rumour at the moment, we think its a great prospect for Audi introducing yet another first to the premium car market!

Viable? What do you think?

I won't be buying a battery powered car anytime soon, but I will be keeping my lovely A2 TDi. :D

New Audi A2 coming in 2015

The Audi A2 is probably the worst Audi model around, stylistically speaking, and could be considered one of the weaker links in the Audi rings. Not that my personal prejudice is the reason for the A2 overhaul in the future, but in any case, a new model is on the cards. According to AutoBild though, that renewal will now take place in 2015, and not 2013 as originally planned. And the smaller car will no longer be based on the Volkswagen Up! platform, but a new mix of Polo and Passat models.

It’s highly likely we’ll be seeing an A2 hybrid model in the future, in addition to a possible all-electric model, too. While previously we were expecting a smaller, citycar model about 370 cm long, these two options indicate that the new A2 will probably be bigger, to house the different drivetrains. Currently, the estimate is that we will see a model about 390 cm long.

The engine range doesn’t look to hold any surprises at this stage, with three and four cylinder models, both petrol and the compulsory diesel in Europe, along with the two ‘green’ options as above (Rupert Stadler previously announced these some time ago). It seems that the A2 could be the beacon for Audi’s environmental offering in the future, as described by research and development head, Michael Dick. With a later arrival, it seems that Audi will lose any advantage over the BMW Megacity, unless it produces something sexier than the current A2.

I don't know why all this fuss about batteries - they use lots of very rare/expensive materials, lose charge very quickly and need to be replaced every few years - not to mention the massive times to charge.

Hydrogen fuel cells it the only viable alternative fuel out there - quick to refill, longer range, better performance and uses the most abundant fuel in the galaxy - hard to make but not impossible to scale up.

Other than flux-capacitors that is (but now the lybians are nice people, you can't get the plutonium from them - but theres kim-jong-un and t'other nutter setting up shop).
